Looking Down The Main Peche Island Canal - Detroit on the Horizon

Peche Island, a 100-acre island was purchased by Hiram Walker in 1883. Walker used the island for a summer place and his buildings included a stable, large home, greenhouse, and icehouse. The property was sold in 1907. The City of Windsor acquired the land from the Province of Ontario in 1999. It is now a naturalized park with walking trails, picnic areas, docking facilities, washrooms - accessable only by boat.

Peche Island - City of Windsor, ON Canada

The Friends of Peche Island was established initially by Henry Shanfield some time ago. After Henry's death in 2003 it became inactive. In 2005 the organization was reformed and registered as a non-profit organization. It is the first not-for-profit, volunteer based organization formed to assist a City Park in all of Canada.

In partnership with The City of Windsor, Parks and Recreation The Friends of Peche Island supports and raises funds through memberships, donations, and retail sales to protect and promote the ecological integrity of this unique Detroit River/Lake St. Clair island for present and future generations to come. We achieve our purpose by focusing on three specific areas of education, research, and habitat restoration.

Education

• develop and publish a book about Peche Island - Trees of Peche IslandWildlife of Peche Island, History of Peche Island, etc.
• host guided bird hikes during the Festival of Birds in May and the W.E. Saunders Birding Odyssey in September.
• update and expand exhibits in the Visitor's Centre and Marsh Boardwalks and bridges.
• provide transportation service to and from the island for use by the citizens of Windsor and visitors to the city.

Research

• fund research on Species at Risk in the park, most recently including the Impact of Raccoon Predation on Turtle Species, and the reintroduction of the Flying Squirrel.

Habitat Restoration

• Waste/debris removal and anti-erosion programs
• support the establishment of a Peche Island Habitat Program for fish, plant and wildlife.
